A two-day meeting at the building complex of Turkmenistan’s oil and gas industry involving the UN experts was the first and most attended “Methane Week” event. The National Focal Point of Turkmenistan for UNFCCC Batyr BALLIYEV commented on the significance of the climate-methane agreements and activities. Elena Dolgova compiled the material on Neutral Turkmenistan.
Turkmenistan is committed to implementing its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) as part of the Paris Agreement. The country aims to reach a 30% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 from the business-as-usual level in 2010. To achieve this, various measures are being taken, such as developing a draft national inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and sinks, preparing a National Adaptation Plan, and formulating a special action plan for 2024-2030. Turkmenistan recently acceded to the methane pledge and supported three declarations at COP 28, including the Coalition for High Ambition Multilevel Partnerships (CHAMP) for Climate Action.
A recent event in Turkmenistan discussed implementing the President's tasks to improve professional skills, introduce digital technologies and reduce negative impacts of the oil and gas sector on the environment and human health. The event also covered week-long consultations on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions due to Turkmenistan's recent accession to the Global Methane Pledge. These consultations also covered aspects of implementing partnerships with international organizations and the Paris Agreement, which Turkmenistan ratified in 2016. These initiatives align with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which Turkmenistan joined in 1995.
