Turkmenistan Outlines UN Priorities for Peace, AI Governance, and Sustainable Transport in Official MFA Statement

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan released an official press statement detailing the country’s strategic priorities and international initiatives ahead of the upcoming 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81). Operating under the national motto of 2026, Turkmenistan reaffirmed its commitment to positive neutrality, multilateralism, and strategic collaboration with the UN to tackle pressing global issues.

According to the Ministry’s statement, Turkmenistan intends to present a comprehensive package of initiatives focused on preventive diplomacy, digital trust, regional connectivity, and environmental security.

Peace, Security, and Preventive Diplomacy Ashgabat will propose interstate consultations under UN auspices to draft a Global Peace Strategy grounded in preventive diplomacy. Key diplomacy initiatives include:

• Proposing 2027–2037 to be declared the UN Decade of Dialogue and Preventive Diplomacy.

• Establishing a Group of Friends of Multilateralism and Sovereign Equality of States within the UN.

• Creating an Academic Center for Peace, Neutrality, and Preventive Diplomacy at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

Digital Innovation and Responsible AI To address the rise of advanced technologies, Turkmenistan proposes drafting a UN international code governing the peaceful application of Artificial Intelligence in international relations and diplomacy. Ashgabat also plans to host an International Expert Dialogue on digital trust and responsible AI usage, alongside submitting a UNGA draft resolution reinforcing the role of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA).

Transport, Logistics, and Climate Action Following the adoption of the resolution declaring 2026–2035 as the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport, Turkmenistan will spearhead the development of a Global Atlas of Sustainable Transport Connectivity. Further proposals include:

• Establishing a UN-sponsored International Center for Sustainable Trade Logistics and Customs Cooperation in Turkmenistan.

• Developing a trans-regional transport corridor via the Caspian Sea linking South and Central Asia to Europe.

• Esablishing the Ashgabat Climate Dialogue to strengthen regional resilience against drought and water scarcity.

International Law and Global Governance Ashgabat has proposed designating 2028 as the International Year of International Law. Currently serving as an active member of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for 2026–2028, Turkmenistan is also laying the groundwork for its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2031–2032 term.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that these priorities reflect Turkmenistan’s unwavering commitment to fostering peace, security, and sustainable development for current and future generations.
